Getting to know the Green Machine

I've decided to call the bug the Green Machine until we can get it running and eventually repainted. We spent some time today just checking it out and trying to figure out what we need to do to get it running. Basically we sat behind the vehicle staring at the engine and reviewing engine diagrams trying find out what's there and what isn't. There are some random parts we can't seem to identify or determine their purpose. I'll be posting to some VW sites later to see if any members there can help us out. One thing we need more than anything else right now.... a battery!! Bill has called around and found that there is a local auto parts store that does have them in stock. Yippee!!

We did clean up the interior and the trunk area. We also inspected the floor pans. The good news, the driver side floor pan seems to be intact. There is very little rust on this side. The bad news, the passenger side floor pan is pretty rotten with rust. In fact, you can see the pavement through a couple of the holes. But we vacuumed up all of the rust. At least it looks better.

Thanks to the weather and the time of the year, it's was the weekend before we could check out what we took off of my sister's hands. She needed to make room for a new scooter in her garage. We had always joked that we'd take one of her Bugs if she was giving it away. Who knew she take us up on the offer. Here's what the car looked like upon arrival at our house.
